Silicon Bronze Tig/solder Description

Silicon Bronze TIG / Solder  Uses For

1. What It Is:
Silicon bronze is an alloy mainly composed of copper (Cu) with about 3–5% silicon (Si) and small amounts of manganese, tin, or zinc.
When used in TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding or as brazing/soldering filler, it is commonly called silicon bronze TIG wire (AWS classification ERCuSi-A).

2. Properties

  • Melting temperature: ~950°C (lower than steel, higher than silver solder).

  • Excellent corrosion resistance (especially to salt water and chemicals).

  • Good strength and ductility (doesn’t crack easily).

  • Smooth, clean weld appearance—golden bronze color.

  • Low heat input compared to steel welding, reducing distortion.

3. Common Uses

Application Description
Joining copper, brass, and bronze Ideal filler for copper-based alloys.
Steel sheet metal & thin gauge parts Used for joining steel panels (like in car body repair) without overheating.
Sculpture & artistic metalwork Popular in bronze artwork and decorative items due to its color.
Marine and plumbing components Excellent corrosion resistance makes it good for seawater fittings and pipes.
Brazing dissimilar metals Can join copper to steel, stainless steel, or cast iron.

4. Key Advantage

Silicon bronze TIG is not a fusion weld on steel—it’s technically a braze, meaning the filler melts but the base metal doesn’t. This allows joining dissimilar or thin metals with minimal warping.
